A Cause for Exposure

City of Hope needs your help to raise funds and unleash a voice for devastating yet “hidden” cancers like prostate, colorectal, ovarian, testicular, bladder, cervical, and uterine that may affect you or someone you know.

Participation in City of Hope’s Underwear Affair™ presented by Jockey helps lift the taboo connected with cancers below the waist.  Why are these cancers considered “taboo?” These cancers affect areas of the body that may be uncomfortable to talk about. Some may not want to see a physician to get screened for these types of cancers. This can make care and treatment an unexplored option to some of those who need it. Shedding light on these cancers means greater awareness and funding, for more research and better treatment.

Funds raised through the Underwear Affair will support City of Hope, a leading research and treatment center for cancer, diabetes and other life-threatening diseases. Underwear Affair funds support research seeking new cures and better treatments for cancers below the waist.

If you’re still not convinced to register, consider these cancer statistics:

  • According to the American Cancer Society, men in the United States face a one in two chance of experiencing cancer during their lives. The lifetime cancer risk for American women is hardly better:  one in three.
  • It is estimated that over 218,000 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in a single year.
  • The expected number of annual cases for colorectal cancer is over 150,000.
  • It is anticipated that over 22,000 new cases of ovarian cancer will arise in a single year.
  • Projected death rates are staggering.
    • When considering cancers of the genital system for both sexes, the estimated annual number of deaths exceeds 306,000.
    • The combined figure for men and women of anticipated deaths for urinary-related cancers is over 120,000 per year.

City of Hope is committed to bringing more effective therapies to patients and in heightening their potency against cancer while also reducing their side effects. In several ongoing efforts, City of Hope is applying advanced immunotherapy approaches, which harness a person’s immune system to attack cancer.

On a separate front, City of Hope doctors are also using the most advanced surgical systems involving robotics, such as with prostate and bladder reconstruction cases, sparing patients from unwanted side effects. Since October 2003, City of Hope physicians have performed nearly 2,500 prostate cancer surgeries, more than any other institution in the western U.S. and second in the entire nation. City of Hope has also performed the largest number of robotic radical cystectomies (bladder removal) in the world. Their highly trained and experienced surgeons perform complex reconstructions through small incisions, reducing blood loss and pain.

Let’s not sit back and let those with cancer suffer in silence. Take part in the Underwear Affair NOW! Join us as we run and walk in a race to uncover their cures!
